How do I setup Lodestar?

Enjoy a seamless setup experience with the Lodestar Dashboard, our web-based configuration tool. Simply plug your Lodestar Hub into a compatible PC or laptop and visit lodestar.tools. From there, you can pair new devices, adjust settings, and most importantly - calibrate your system for accurate tracking.

What platforms are supported?

All Lodestar devices communicate using the Human Interface Device (HID) standard, which is supported by all major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. A hub can report the pose of all paired trackers, while individual trackers report only their own pose. Lodestar is designed to be fully cross-platform, with compatibility ultimately depending on developer support.

What software support exists?

At launch, we will release a Unity SDK, with an Unreal SDK and a SteamVR driver to follow shortly after. The goal of the Founders Kits is to grow our community of developers and professionals by providing the tools needed to integrate next-generation tracking into both new and existing software. Initial support will be limited - but we're committed to building it out quickly, and we’re excited to improve with your feedback and involvement.

What is required? Do I need a PC?

For regular use, no host computer or internet connection is needed. The only requirements are that the hub is powered (via USB port or wall charger) and that at least three pucks are configured as anchors and properly calibrated (for 6DoF mode).

However, a PC or laptop with an internet connection and a Chromium-based browser is required during initial setup or configuration. While an offline version of the dashboard is available, it must be downloaded in advance.

How does it work?

Lodestar leverages revolutionary radio technology to deliver precise spatial tracking. By transmitting both ultra-wideband and narrowband packets between pucks, Lodestar captures detailed channel and timing data to map the environment and determine each tracker's location within it. This spatial information is then fused with high-frequency inertial sensor data using advanced algorithms and onboard processing. As a result, Lodestar pucks self-localize their absolute position and orientation with low latency and high precision.

What are Anchors? Why do I need them?

Founders Kits include four pucks. In most setups, three of these will be used as Anchors.

Anchors act as external reference points for Lodestar’s tracking system. The name “Lodestar” comes from the bright stars sailors once used for navigation - Anchors serve a similar role, grounding your tracking system in physical space. By providing consistent external references, Anchors eliminate positional and rotational drift entirely.

Lodestar pucks can switch between Tracker and Anchor modes at any time. You can use as few or as many Anchors as your setup requires. For full 6DoF tracking, at least three Anchors are necessary. Adding more can improve reliability and extend range, but may reduce refresh rate. The right balance depends on your specific application.

Can I use Lodestar for full-body tracking?

At launch, full-body tracking will not be directly supported. However, once the Lodestar SteamVR driver is released, you'll be able to use Lodestar trackers like any other SteamVR-tracked device. This means simple and reliable full-body tracking will soon be possible with Lodestar!

For standalone use, full-body tracking support will depend on individual developers implementing it on a per-application basis.

How many trackers can I use at the same time?

At launch, Founders Kits will support a maximum of 16 total devices. Up to 6 can be used as trackers and up to 10 as anchors simultaneously.

It's important to note that both the number of trackers and anchors affect the tracking refresh rate. With three anchors, you can use up to three trackers at the full 100Hz refresh rate. However, using four or more trackers will reduce the refresh rate to 50Hz. Depending on your application, this tradeoff may be acceptable.

T = Number of Trackers

F = 3 (system constant)
